What is Weight Loss/Obesity?
Obesity in horses is extremely common and largely results from overfeeding or when horses have free access to pastures that is too high in energy for them. The Henneke horse body condition scoring system is a numerical scale used to evaluate this.
Feeding management requires a diet as low in energy as possible without restricting feed intake so much as to cause behavioural changes or health problems like ulcers.
Pryde's EasiFeed Products That Can Help
When to use this feed
Use EasiFeed 300 Pellets when feeding overweight horses that only need vitamins and minerals added to their diet.
Feed it With
Feed the EasiFeed 300 Pellet with low energy hay or pasture. Mature, stemmy grass hays, mature pasture or weather damaged lucern hay are suitable. Add 1/8 cup of EasiOil to the diet to keep the horses coat and skin healthy.
Other Tips
You may need to restrict access to pasture and hay to encourage weight loss. A grazing muzzle can be used to reduce pasture intake or the amount of hay fed can be reduced to 1.5 kg/100 kg of body weight per day.
